Comments:
Better Business Bureau (BBB) rates him an "F."
Attorney James J. Standley, is a lawyer and seems like a rookie junk debt buyer/collector/bottom feeder. His validation consists of sending consumer copy of junk debts he may have bought from a third party.
Standley appears to be new at this -- he appears unable to connect the dots.
He seems like an easy target for consumers to go after as his sloppiness and apparent lack of the business knowledge will most likely be his undoing. Get him while he still has money -- while he can afford to pay. Do not allow him to get a judgment under any circumstances.
On Dec. 08, 2008, Standley entered into an Order Approving Conditional Admission of Misconduct and Imposing Sanctions Pursuant to C.R.P. 251.22, with the Supreme Court and State of Colorado. As of that date he was suspended from the practice of law for a period of 60 days, all stayed upon the successful completion of a two-year probation.

Thank you, Bud Hibbs, for adding James J. Standley to your list of horrible collectors. Most people who receive a call from Mr. Standley's office speak with a Mr. Dupree. He says a legal assistant to Mr. James J. Standley ... Horrible person to deal with.. Best to not even speak with him. They have been unable to provide documentation, in 2008 and 2010, that the debt is mine and how they "aquired" the debt. Thanks Bud, for your help.

This company has begun contacting me, and several points have made me suspicious. The first time they called me at work claiming to be collecting a debt for US Bank, I informed them that I didn't know what this was regarding as I currently have accounts with US Bank in good standing and don't owe anything. The agent was polite the first day telling me to contact the bank and get back to him. However the next day he called me at work again, I told him I was unable to talk as I was at work and would call him back as soon as I was able to find out what was going on from US Bank. I did receive a letter from them that evening, however the agent on the phone quoted me a different amount due than was in the letter, making me very suspicious about this debt. The third time the agent called my work, didn't identify himself, simply asked to verify our company's address. After I gave the address he spoke very quickly saying he was calling from "Standley and Associates" and that they would be serving me paperwork at work since I "don't know how to call people back" and immediately hung up. I looked up Standley and Associates online when I got home their website is "under construction" and only gives a phone number, e-mail address, and (suspiciously) a slightly different physical address from the one they provided in their letter. Since I am entitled to dispute the debt I immediately wrote a letter questioning it both because I don’t believe I owe my bank any money and because of the discrepancy in amounts their lawfirm claims. I also told them that they were not allowed to contact me at my place of employment, but could send mail to my home or call on my cell which I provided for them. I emailed the letter that evening, faxed a copy first thing in the morning and sent a certified copy to both addresses. Hopefully this stops their queer collection techniques!

I am dealing with this collection agency right now. What consumers have to be aware of is how he preys against our knowlege on how collections work and consumer rights. He knows how to play you. The biggest mistake consumers make is to to not follow thru on the court dates and times. He only wins judgments because no one shows up, not because he has the proper documentations. He is a snake, I've also researched him and in 2008 the Colorado Bar association had him on a two year probation and suspended his license because of misconduct. I think, he thinks he is above the law.
